As you have a selection of clubs in golf for driving, chipping, and putting in golf, you have different discs for different shots in disc golf. Distance drivers provide maximum distance to get the most out of your drives. Fairway drivers are drivers which are made for long accurate shots. Mid-Range discs provide a range of discs for all sorts of long to medium range shots. Putt & Approach discs give you the accuracy to get the disc to and in the target. Most players use a selection of different types of discs to play disc golf.

A quick lesson on flight characteristics: Stable - The tendency of a disc to remain straight through most of the flight. Understable/Turnover - The tendency of a disc to turn to the right during the high speed portion of the flight for a Right Hand Back Hand (RHBH) thrower. Overstable - The tendency of a disc to turn to the left at high or low speeds for a RHBH thrower. Hyzer - Is an angle of release where the outside edge or left edge of the disc is tilted downward for a RHBH thrower. Anhyzer - Is an angle of release where the outside edge or left edge of the disc is tilted upward for a RHBH thrower.

I am new to disc golf. What are the best discs for a beginner to throw? Resist the temptation to try lots of different discs. Concentrate on learning to throw only one disc until you develop a feel for throwing golf discs. Some excellent disc choices for new players are: Aero, Leopard, Polecat, Cobra, Stingray, Archangel and Sidewinder.

What are the best golf discs for a young child: ages 6 to 12? The best golf discs for a younger child would be from our EDGE line of discs. EDGE discs weigh 135 grams or less. These discs are specifically designed for children ages 6-12 that are participating in the EDGE (Educational Disc Golf Experience) program. Try the EDGE Polecat, EDGE Shark or EDGE Ace. For older children, 150-class discs would be a good choice as well. The Archangel, Aviar, Leopard, Sidewinder, Spider and Valkyrie are some of the many discs available in 150-gram weights that are ideal for younger players and newcomers to the sport. Look for these discs at a local retailer or from an online vendor like discgolfvalues.com.

Should I have a driver, mid-range disc and a putter? How do I choose the correct disc? Established disc golfers tend to use of a variety of discs. Once you become more comfortable throwing golf discs, you may consider using different discs for different types of shots. Use a Driver for tee shots and long fairway drives. Use a Multi-purpose disc for shorter shots and approaching the basket. Use a Putter for short approaches and putts.

Beginners can choose one of the following Drivers as these discs are the easiest discs to throw far. Choose lighter weights for better results: Archangel (great disc), Valkyrie (a lot of left hand players swing towards the Valk), Sidewinder (top seller), Cheetah or Leopard (lightweight DX destroyers, light sidewinders any plastic, road runners light any plastic i could go on...J). For a Multi-purpose disc with a predictable flight, choose one of these discs: Shark (tends to fade at the end in better plastics), Panther or Spider (my preference Cobra, stingray light weight roc any). For Putters, consider choosing the Polecat and Birdie as they are predictably straight flyers. The Aviar is also an excellent choice (R-Pro Aviar, R-Pro Dart, R-Pro Hydra it floats).

What are the letters and numbers that appear on the bottom of the discs? The numbers that appear on the bottom of the discs refer to the weight of the disc in grams. The letters denote the disc model. Go to Disc Abbreviations to translate the letters that appear on the bottom of our discs.

What weight discs should I throw? Weight is more a matter of preference than ability. In general light discs are easier to throw faster and will fly farther except into a headwind. Heavy discs are harder to throw fast, but are easier to control in the wind. Recommended weights for younger and/or newer players: Putter-165gm to 175gm, Multi-Purpose -155gm to 165gm, Driver-150gm to 165gm. (I recommend all to start in this range as well)

Should I throw Champion, Pro or DX discs? Champion, Pro and DX are three different types of plastics we use to manufacture our discs. Each of these plastic types offers advantages in particular situations. (My opinion is to back down a few grams for pro from dx and a couple more from pro to champion or star as they seem to get more stable the better the plastic)

You've come to the right place.

Like ball golf clubs, golf discs are designed to produce a variety of flight paths within a variety of playing conditions. Some are designed for maximum distance, some to turn left or right, and some for highly controlled short distance shots.

The important thing to understand is that there is no such thing as a 'beginner disc.' The discs recommended on this page can also be found in the bags of many top pros. However, there are most definitely discs that are considered to be more suited to advanced players. We'll be steering you away from those discs until you have achieved a better understanding of the mechanics of disc golf.

What To Look For: stability Each Discraft disc is rated for stability. At the far end of this scale is a stability rating of 3.0, which indicates a very overstable and difficult to control disc, such as the Predator driver, which has a rating of 2.5. Discs with a high stability rating will have a tendancy to 'hyzer,' and you may find it challenging to keep them flying straight.

At the opposite end of the stability scale is a rating of -3.0, which indicates a very understable disc. These are much more easy to control, especially when the discs are new. Nearly all discs become somewhat less overstable as they wear.

The bottom line for your needs regarding stability is this: look for discs with a lower stability rating. Any Discraft disc with a stability rating at or below 1.0 will be more suited for your game.

What To Look For: weight The weight of a disc can also affect its stability. The rule of thumb is: a heavier version of any given disc will tend to be slightly more overstable than a lighter version of the same disc. Many of the pro golfers on Team Discraft throw the heaviest discs available. That's fine for pros, but you will want to start with some lighter weights such as 166 grams.

Some Discraft discs are also available in a special lightweight class known as '150 Class.' These discs all weigh 150 grams or less, and are generally the lightest golf discs available. They can be very easy to throw, and will go a country mile! Give one a try.

Enough Blah Blah Blah: I need a disc! Okay, okay. Let's cut to the chase.

There is some internal debate at Discraft about which model is the absolute perfect disc as a player's first disc. But, since I'm the guy who is creating this guide for you, my wise and learned opinion wins out.

The perfect starter disc, and the best golf disc ever is: the Buzzz

The Buzzz is a midrange disc with a stability rating of 0.5. It won't get squirrely on you: throw it flat, it flies flat. Throw it left, it goes left. Throw it hard, it goes far. And it has just a twinge of overstabilty, which will take you a long way toward understanding how other golf discs fly. So grab one and go. Ten years from now, you'll still be throwing it... and winning.

That's a good start, but I want more choices Got ya covered.

Below are some suggestions for various drivers, mids and putt/approach discs for you to get started with. Our top picks for you are at the top of each category. Each is linked to that model's web page if you'd like to read more. See you on the course!
